HAL-PC Learning Resources Section

Dear Student,

Most of our classes are hands-on and are offered in the HAL-PC Learning Center. Classes that are not hands on are called lectures. Hands on classes are limited to 12 students and every student has a computer at his/her workstation. Lecture's may have up to 100 students.

You may register for a class right before the class begins so long as there is space in the class. Most prefer to preregister online at: http://www.hal-pc.org/classes, by calling the HAL-PC Office at 713-993-3300 or by visiting HAL-PC Headquarters at: 4543 Post Oak Place, Ste. 200.

Students on a waiting list for a specific class are contacted at the first availability of that class.

You don't have to be a member of HAL-PC to enjoy the benefit of learning from our exceptional instructors and taking advantage of our classroom resources. HAL-PC Members will, however, receive a discount on their class registration fees and will most likely find that we also have a SIG meeting that they can attend to expand their knowledge base.

Also, HAL-PC's computer lab is open to members of HAL-PC from 9am to 9pm Monday thru Friday and 9am to 5pm on Saturday. HAL-PC Members are welcome to use the computers in the computer lab for their homework and practice.

You may join HAL-PC online at: http://office.hal-pc.org/signup or by calling 713-993-3300.

Our classes do have some prerequisites. In all classes you must own or have access to a computer in order to do homework and practice. To determine if you meet any other prerequisites for a class you may contact the instructor directly using the email addresses provided below, visit the HAL-PC Website's classes pages at: http://www.hal-pc.org/classes, email classes@hal-pc.org or call 713-993-3300.

Upon successful completion of a class offered by HAL-PC our students receive a HAL-PC certificate acknowledging their accomplishment!

We hope you'll join us. I think you'll be glad you did!

Sincerely,
Anne Sipes , Education Committee Chair

Topics covered include: computer basics, terminology, hardware and software definitions, safety precautions and Windows operating system features. Also covers familiarity of what a computer can do, programs on the computer, and how to run them. Some of these programs are: Notepad, WordPad?, Calculator, Paint, and the Control Panel. This course is a continuation of the BEGINNER course with emphasis on Windows. Topics covered include: additional Windows features such as Windows Explorer, My Computer, creating shortcuts and folders, finding and renaming files, formatting, copying, scanning, defragging disks, and personalizing your computer using the Control Panel. In addition, three modules are presented to introduce the student to the Word Processing, Spreadsheet, and Database Management features of MSWorks. Each student has a computer and a full set of handouts. Lots of hands-on practice and discussion. Bring two floppy disks to class. NOTE: Every student MUST take the above courses before taking any of the ADVANCED COURSES listed below at the Senior Learning Center SLC. Exceptions are made when prospective students feel that they are past the "beginners and intermediate" stage and have discussed this with and obtained a waiver from an advanced level instructor.

KEYBOARDING: (Self-paced. Unlimited lessons.)

This is a self-taught, self-improvement course to improve typing skills in the home environment. Those students who have been away from or are new to typing will find this helpful. Ask for details at the desk. Not a formal, instructed course.

FILE MANAGEMENT: (6 lessons, 2 per week)

This basic course teaches students how to manage files, folders, disks, and drives. Topics covered include: terminology, types, maintenance, formatting, finding, shortcuts, and opening/saving files in various programs. Since a majority of students are not skilled typists, emphasis is placed on editing pre-existing text. Each student has a computer and a full set of handouts. Lots of hands-on practice and discussion. Bring two floppy disks to class.

SPREADSHEETS: (6 lessons, 2 per week)

This course teaches students how to create simple spreadsheets for home or small business purposes using the MSWorks spreadsheet program. Bring two floppy disks to class.

DATABASE MANAGEMENT: (6 lessons, 2 per week)

This course introduces students to the database management function of MSWorks. Topics covered include: database terminology, explanation of fields and records, and the different views available for access to database information. A class handout and floppy disk are used to examine and discuss a typical "name and address" database file. The prepared database allows the student to become familiar with the sorting, find, find and replace, filters, reports and the printing features of the program without actually building a database. Each student has a computer and a full set of handouts. Lots of hands-on practice and discussion. Bring two floppy disks to class.

INTERNET: (8 lessons, 2 per week)

This basic course introduces students to the Internet. Topics covered include: terminology, sending/receiving e-mail and email attachments, basic searching for people/businesses, "surfing", word searching, shopping, and downloading software. Prerequisite: Must be online at home.

PRINT SHOP: (6 lessons, 1 per week)

This basic course teaches students how to make projects using the Print Shop program. Topics covered include: how to create signs, banners, greeting cards, and personal business cards using three major building blocks - headlines, message text, and graphics. Clip art or Print Shop graphics are normally used, but personal photographs may be substituted. Each week the instructor will demonstrate a project in the classroom, then the student creates his/her own version of the project in the computer lab.

Each student has a computer and a full set of handouts. Lots of hands-on practice and discussion. Bring two floppy disks to class.

SCANNING, PHOTO EDITING & PRINTING: (8 lessons, 2 per week)

This course teaches students both the basics and some of the more subtle elements of scanning and photo editing (serious and fun stuff) as well as some quality printing techniques. For most class periods, a specific project will be demonstrated, then each student will have hands-on experience with this same project under the guidance of the instructor. Each student has a computer and a full set of handouts. Lots of hands-on practice and discussion. Bring two floppy disks to class.

USING YOUR DIGITAL CAMERA: (6 lessons, 2 per week)

This course teaches students the basics of digital cameras and image files. Topics covered include: setting up the camera to take good pictures, requirements for email and print pictures, managing image files on your hard drive, lightly editing image files, preparing slide shows, creating and printing thumbnail contact sheets, and much more. Each student has a computer and a full set of handouts. Lots of hands-on practice and discussion. Bring two floppy disks to class.

BASIC WEB PAGE CONSTRUCTION (6 lessons, 2 per week)

This course teaches students how to create a web page using Netscape's free Web-authoring program called Page Composer. The course begins with the basics necessary to create a page with text and a few simple features, such as text formatting, hyperlinks, and horizontal lines. Slightly more complex features, such as images, lists, and tables are then covered. Finally students will learn how to publish their page to their web account using FTP software. Once comfortable with the basic idea of web-authoring, students can freely revise and update their page and add additional features, if desired.

This will not be a class on HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language.) There will be no scripting, Java code, Flash, or form templates material covered in this course.

Each student will have a computer and will receive a full set of handouts. There will be lots of hands-on practice and discussion. Bring two floppy disks to class. A list and source of other free software will be provided.
