The popular "Basic Computer Use" taught on Linux, not MS Windows.  Same content, same low price.  The only difference is the Operating System, and a beginner will hardly notice.  We will use the Knoppix bootable Live CD, and each student will get to take it home.

Well you can, and we will show you how.

It's called Webmail, and every HAL mail account has it. It doesn't matter if
you are a HAL-PC member or a HALNet subscriber, you can access your mail from
any computer that has a browser & an Internet connection.

Topics include:

   * Logging on
   * Setting up your account
   * Reading messages
   * Writing messages
   * Your address book
   * Sending messages (not quite the same as just writing)
   * Saving messages (filing?!)
   * Deleting messages
   * Spam strategies
   * Where to get help

There will be two 2 hour lectures and an optional 1 hour hands-on lab.

Linux for Cowards

The Linux Desktop Comes of Age   or   How to Divorce Bill Gates and Not Pay Alimony

Curious about Linux?  This is the presentation for you.  Aimed at the general audience, this has a history of Linux, a comparison of Linux to MS Windows, and an exploration of KDE, the normal KNOPPIX desktop.

All HAL-PC members, guests, & visitors are invited.  This edition of "Linux for Cowards", tagged "SE-SP1" (Second Edition, Sevice Pack 1) for fun, will be especially for the Microsoft® Windows user who is considering a change. 

We will cover hardware compatibility & software availability, well as other uses for Linux machines:  dedicated firewalls, TiVo clones, and home LAN servers.

All you do is boot the Knoppix "Live" CD and in 5 minutes or less you have a Linux desktop.  When you are done, you remove the Knoppix CD and reboot to your installed OS.  We will show you how to get and burn your own copy of Knoppix, as well as give away 25 copies.  Within Knoppix we will demonstrate the similarities and differences between the two desktops (Linux and Microsoft® Windows). 

We will end with a drawing for doorprizes, followed by Questions & Answers.
