A Boy Named DamnAt first, I liked DSL Linux, which is but a 50 MB download, and runs in RAM. The name is uniquely crude, and accurate. It was fun for a bit, but then it trailed off, since it isn't meant to be a full-featured distribution. It ran well on old hardware, but had nowhere to run to. The framebuffer driver chewed up my video card, and spat out rainbow vomit, although I set XFree86 going nicely later. My test computer is a Compaq presaro 1230 laptop. A true dog among old laptops. I wish that it had shipped with Thunderbird for mail. I enjoyed fluxbox with icons, and the quick start-up time. After a while though, my tinkering thoughts took me to dead ends, and I wanted my regular Debian back. I also wanted a new computer. It may be possible to run Linux on anything, but you won't always enjoy the results. Equally, Damn Small Linux can let you try out Linux, but also may give you false negative misconceptions. I definitely wouldn't reccommend it as a Linux welcome wagon. |
