Unreal results

Short, and sweet, I love PDF printing. I use it every day, and I want the world to share my love. In all my efforts, except one, this has proven to be an area where Linux shows great success. It is easy to set up, and as a result, you can cut down the amount of real paper you use up, and ink of course. I do it to save my online transaction information. I store them on a removable memory stick, and that's it.

So, I decided to ask our members to try the same thing, on their machines. All repondants were successful, and commented, on the ease of setup. Users of OSX KDE and GNOME have it set by default, and everyone else can use the CUPS virtual printer. I even found a GPL virtual PDF printer for MS Windows. It was a true slam dunk, and I am happy to spread the word about this great software feature. I wish I could say that there was some complex process involved, but really, I just typed:

apt-get install cups-pdf

then launched localhost:631/ and added a PDF prineter from the CUPS admin tool. Files are dopped in each user's home directory.

To be fair, I am simply using PDF printing for virtual paper, and I am not using it to create format-intensive master documents for distribution, which more than likely requires heavier lifting. If you make such PDF's regularly, try out a virtual PDF printer, and provide some comparison commentary. As always, send it to lugnut at houston dot rr dot com.
