Download

If you are new to downloading, see Opera Download & Install to get an idea of how to do it.  Although specific to Opera, it is a good exercise, and you get a fine browser as a bonus.

Verify

Verification is done with md5sum.  That's what those  someprogram.iso.md5  files are for.

Much more could be written, but for the moment, here are links to 2 Microsoft® Windows programs —

  • I use this one:
http://www.md5summer.org/
  • This one also looks good:
http://winmd5sum.solidblue.biz/

In GNU/Linux, use md5sum.  (Try man md5sum or md5sum -cv.  )

Burn

This is the part that needs expansion.

2 tips:

  • Current versions of Nero (Microsoft® Windows) will burn from .iso files, however reluctantly.
One stupidity:  my copy insists on making a Nero image file (& leaving it on my hd) in addition to the .iso file that is already there.

  • In K3b (GNU/Linux), do not  use the Data CD facilities — you will get a data CD that contains the .iso file, not   the bootable disk you were trying to make.
To make a bootable  CD, use "Tools | CD | Burn Image".

Download Help

How the heck is a beginner supposed to transition from "the Darkside" into Enlightenment (forgive the pun) if s/he can't download, check, & burn a Linux disk?  Every time I read the almost condescending remark in Knoppix about not giving Microsoft® Windows burning instuctions, my blood starts to boil.  They say Linux is no place for such help.

Here is a page to build a set of easy instuctions in those areas.
