Opera Download & Install

Purpose

This page is primarily for students in "Basic Computer Use", but if you find it helpful, please use it. 

Short Instructions

Slides 11—14 from the presentation "Opera for Near Sighted Cowards" (ver. 3) contain an overview of the download & installation process, which may be sufficient for many readers.  Even if you decide you need the long instructions below, you should review the short instructions here.

Long Instructions

  • Start with the Opera download link: 
      http://www.opera.com/download/?ver=7.51
    1. Remember you may have to scroll up & down to see the whole page
    2. In  Choose one option:  pick  Non-Java
        This is not what we said in class, but it is much simpler.
    3. In  Choose download location:  pick the 2nd choice, the one in the dropdown box.  Do not use Simtel, it gets too complicated.
    4. Click the red "Download Now" button.
    5. File Download box: 
        Make sure the choice is "Save this pogram to disk", & click "OK"
    6. Save As box: 
        Look at the "Save in:" dropdown area at the top, write down the destination. 
      Click on the "Save" button (lower right). 
      Wait for the download to finish.
    7. Download complete box: 
      Click "Open"
    8. Opera 7.23 Installation box: 
      Click:
      1. Welcome:  "Next"
      2. Software License Agreement:  "I accept"
      3. Select Destination Directory "Next"
      4. Icon Creation:  Uncheck anything you don't want, then "Next"
      5. Ready to Install!:  "Install"
      6. Installayion completed!:  "Finish"
    9. First-time Setup box 1 (Opera): 
      We recommend "Show relevant text ads ...", then "Next"
    10. First-time Setup box 2 (Opera): 
      "Finish" (i.e. accept the defaults)
     Congratulations, you have a working Opera browser!
