They reported back that it was too difficult for a normal user.  I (ra) read the installation guide available at the time, and concluded that the problem was a confusung emphasis on ISDN, combined with an unfamiliarity with GNU/Linux systems.

In retrospect I believe they were working with ver. 1.x.

They reported back that it refused to recognize the NIC's, and so they could not complete the install.  I (ra) have talked to them again in light of the success A+ has had with it.  I am hoping to help them make it work, perhaps even have an "install fest" in Oct.

Build or Buy

In the spring of '04 Joe Whinery & George __ attempted to install SmoothWall on an old PC.  They reported back that it was too difficult for a normal user.  I (ra) read the installation guide available at the time, and concluded that the problem was a confusung emphasis on ISDN, combined with an unfamiliarity with GNU/Linux systems.

In retrospect I believe they were working with ver. 1.x.

A+

In August of '04 the A+ SIG spent 2 sessions (as of 2004/08/18) on machines owned by:
  • Peter Pedrana
       Ethernet — success
  • David Shackleford
       Modem — success
  • Rick Archibald
       Ethernet — bad CD-ROM – won't boot

Later Donn Washburn reported by e-mail that he had sucessfully installed it at home.

Rick Archibald also sucessfully installed it at home (after putting in a much newer CD reader).  His TWiki page on the experience is here:  SmoothWallHoratio
