Restarting after the Holiday break our goals are: 

1. Get 2 (RH & SuSE) reliable enterprise server installations running
2. Finish Ch. 2
3. On to Ch. 3 (it's short)
4. Establish a regular meeting time
5. Discuss becoming a formal HAL SIG

Chapter 2 Lab

Chapter 2 Lab, Part 1

Meeting was actually held in the Lab. 
Robert Spotswood was invaluable to the success of the meeting. 
We completed Excercise 2.2.3 on a Knoppix box as our server.

Sorry folks, this one was not properly announced -- it only appeared on the HAL-PC SIG Calendar.

We did Exercise 2.2.2, setting up our server on a Knoppix machine.

Excercise 2.2.2 continued:  We are going to add a Win ME box to the network & configure it.  We hope to attach a printer & make it work also.

Robert Spotswood will join us again for the lab.  He is a successfully self-employed computer consultant & a member of HLUG.  He also probably has as much or more practical Samba experience as anyone we know.

Next meeting will be sometime in October.  We will be starting on Chapter 2.  Bill Hancock has agreed to do the presentation.

Bill Hancock will present the Theory behind Ch. 2 of "Samba 3 by Example" and preview the exercises for the Lab. Steve Musacchia is helping him & it is very good.

He has taken the time to put together a Power Point show (don't worry we'll get him on Impress if it kills both of us), so we should be well organized ...

As might be expected of a new group, we got off a slow start.  However, we overcame various equipment problems, & finished 3 of the 4 excercises in Ch 1.  We had more than enough hardware to accomplish our goals.  My thanks to all who brought equipment, especially Cleveland Glenn & Jeff Boggan whose gear was not used.  Much, much better to have extras than be caught short. 

I hope everyone had an enjoyable, and more important, a productive time.  A least one person noticed that when you bring a diverse group like this together, unexpected learning happens.

Chapter 1 Lab, Part 1 — Lessons Learned & Meeting Notes:

• Our capture files are not like their capture files, this causes confusion.
• "Winders" boxes are very chatty, real extroverts.
• Ethereal is a great analysis tool.
• We probably should try for shorter capture files.
• Their Figures don't always agree with the text (more confusion).
• We need to preview the exercises more carefully.
• Bad projectors suck, VGA multipliers can be wonderful.

Equipment is arranged; however, anyone who wants to bring their own sniffer is not only welcome to, but encouraged to.  If all you have available is a "Winders" box, you can run Knoppix on it.  ethereal 0.10.4-1 is on Knoppix 3.4-2004-05-17 (the latest), so anyone can bring their own box & run a sniffer ...
