We completed Excercise 2.2.3 on a Knoppix box as our server.

Robert Spotswood will join us again for the lab.  He is a successfully self-employed computer consultant & a member of HLUG.  He also probably has as much or more practical Samba experience as anyone we know.

S3bE Chapter 2

Chapter 2 Theory

Sat., October 16, 2004
1 pm -- 3 pm
SIG B
Scheduling is confirmed.
This could be slipped half an hour or a whole hour later, if warranted by popular demand.

Bill Hancock will present the Theory behind Ch. 2 of "Samba 3 by Example" and preview the exercises for the Lab. Steve Musacchia is helping him & it is very good.

He has taken the time to put together a Power Point show (don't worry we'll get him on Impress if it kills both of us), so we should be well organized ...

Suggested Reading

Uh, how about Chapter 2.  Seriously, we will try to post relevant TOSHARG readings also.

Samba Study Group Meetings

This is a dual-purpose page – used to report on meeting that have already taken place, as well as announce the time, place, & agenda of future meetings.

We are scheduling meetings when people can attend & there is space available.

Preliminary

Initially, there were brief SAMBA interludes at 2 A+ meetings, and 1 small workshop to see if we can do this.  Both were quite successful:  The 5 of us at the workshop proved we have the knowledge & equipment to do the exercises; and we had a separate SAMBA "Theory" meeting to avoid diverting the A+ group from their main objectives.

S3bE Chapter 1

Chapter 1 Theory, Part 1

  • Thur.  07/29/2004
  • 6:30 pm — 8:30 pm
  • SIG A?
  • Rick Archibald
    • Quick overview of basic networking.
    • Overview of SAMBA.
    • Preview of S3xE Ch. 1.
    • Brief digressions as necessary.
Thanks to the 14 folks who showed up, the size & enthusiasm of the crowd was gratifying and a bit of a surprise.  The presentation was informal (no slides, no time to make them), yet we accomplished the stated goals and also organized equipment duties for the lab to follow.

Recommended reading:

  • TOSHARG Ch. 9
  • TOSHARG Ch. 3
  • S3bE Ch. 1

Chapter 1 Lab, Part 1

  • Sat.  07/31/2004.
  • 12 noon — 4:45 pm.
  • Workshop / Game Room.
  • Rick Archibald, Steve Musacchia, et al.
    • S3bE, Chapter 1 Examples.
Attendance:  16       Thanks for coming.
Several of us were late due to unexpected road closings & resulting traffic.  In the future we should :
a.)   Check the traffic & road closings.
    b.)   Use San Felipe anyway.

As might be expected of a new group, we got off a slow start.  However, we overcame various equipment problems, & finished 3 of the 4 excercises in Ch 1.  We had more than enough hardware to accomplish our goals.  My thanks to all who brought equipment, especially Cleveland Glenn & Jeff Boggan whose gear was not used.  Much, much better to have extras than be caught short.

I hope everyone had an enjoyable, and more important, a productive time.  A least one person noticed that when you bring a diverse group like this together, unexpected learning happens.

    • S3bE 1.3.3.1 – Simple Windows Client Connection Characteristics
The ethereal capture files are here?

Note:  The big difference between the HTML version and both the .PDF & bound versions, is that the HTML lacks the section numbers.

  • Preview / brief the 2nd lab:
    • S3bE 1.3.1.4 – Windows 200x/XP Client Interaction with Samba-3

Chapter 1 Lab, Part 1 — Lessons Learned & Meeting Notes:

Presented by:  Rick w/ the whole crew adding their $.02 worth ...
  • Our capture files are not like their capture files, this causes confusion.
  • "Winders" boxes are very chatty, real extroverts.
  • Ethereal is a great analysis tool.
  • We probably should try for shorter capture files.
  • Their Figures don't always agree with the text (more confusion).
  • We need to preview the exercises more carefully.
  • Bad projectors suck, VGA multipliers can be wonderful.

Chapter 1 Laboratory, Part 2

Sat. Aug. 14, 2004 in the Lab again.
12 noon — 4:45 pm.
Scheduling is confirmed.

Equipment is arranged; however, anyone who wants to bring their own sniffer is not only welcome to, but encouraged to.  If all you have available is a "Winders" box, you can run Knoppix on it.  ethereal 0.10.4-1 is on Knoppix 3.4-2004-05-17 (the latest), so anyone can bring their own box & run a sniffer ...

Agenda

  • Do
    • S3bE 1.3.1.4 – Windows 200x/XP Client Interaction with Samba-3
  • Re-do (by popular demand)
