Basic Computer Use
--------------------------------------
Do you think a mouse is vermin, a rodent that the cat is supposed to kill?
Do you know someone who does?
Do you want to learn to use a computer, but dread all that boring technical stuff?
Do you just want to learn how to send e-mail and find new favorite recipes?
Then HAL-PC has the class for you, your grandmother, or your favorite Aunt Tillie.
"Basic Computer Use" teaches the three "S's" of modern personal computers:
Surfin', Searchin', & Sendin'.
In 8 short meetings we will have you or Aunt Tillie surfing with the best of them.

The course you have been clamoring for!
Or at least the staff have been bugging us to teach.
The popular "Basic Computer Use" taught on Linux, not MS Windows.
Same content, same low price.
The only difference is the Operating System, and a beginner will hardly notice.
We will use the Knoppix bootable Live CD, and each student will get to take it home.
Instructor: Rick Archibald
4 week program scheduled for:
September 20th & 27th - 4 pm to 6 pm
October 4th & 11th - 4 pm to 6 pm
Curious about Linux? This is the presentation for you.
Aimed at the general audience, this has a history of Linux,
a comparison of Linux to MS Windows,
and an exploration of KDE, the normal Linux desktop.
All HAL-PC members, guests, & visitors are invited.
This edition of "Linux for Cowards", tagged "SE-SP1" (Second Edition, Sevice Pack 1)
for fun, will be especially for the Microsoft® Windows user who is considering a change.
We will cover hardware compatibility & software availability, well as other uses for Linux machines:
dedicated firewalls, TiVo clones, and home LAN servers.
One of the slogans of Knoppix, showcased in the second half of the talk.
All you do is boot the Knoppix "Live" CD and in 5 minutes or less you have a Linux desktop.
When you are done, you remove the Knoppix CD and reboot to your installed OS.
We will show you how to get and burn your own copy of Knoppix,
as well as give away 25 copies.
Within Knoppix we will demonstrate the similarities and differences
between the two desktops (Linux and Microsoft® Windows).
We will end with a drawing for doorprizes, followed by Questions & Answers.
From Slide 4 of the presentation:
Can you say "Presbyopia"?
Can you spell "Presbyopia"?
Can you define "Presbyopia"?
Do you have Presbyopia?
("Presbyopia" is the medical term for ageing eyes.)
Seriously —
- Do you wear bi-, tri-, or multi-focal glasses?
- Do you ever have trouble reading your computer screen,
especially those web sites with 2 point gray type on a jet black background?
- Are tired of not being able to fix the size of things quickly & easily?
- Are you worried about the apparently incurable security flaws in your built-in browser?
Then Opera may be the browser for you.
In the last year, Rick Archibald has entertained the Internet SIG,
the Basic Internet SIG, and Build or Buy with this introduction to his favorite browser.
Rick is our Linux Workshop SIG leader and "Basic Computer Use" instructor.

Education Month continues into October:
We all know how to use the keyboard to type in text boxes,
but did you know you can use it to navigate around your computer?
Ask yourself the following questions:
- Has your mouse ever died?
- Are you tired of constantly switching your hand between mouse and keyboard?
- Do you suffer from Mouse Wrist or Mouse Arm?
RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) from using the mouse too much.
- Did you ever wonder what the underlined letters in your menus are for?
- Are you tired of running out of room on the mouse pad?
- Do you waste too much time moving "el raton" all around the screen?
- Are you looking for a faster, easier way?
- Do you just hate mice?
If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then Uncle Rick Wants You!
(With apologies to the author of that WW1 recruiting poster).
Windows Keyboard Secrets will show you the untaught hidden power of your keyboard.

"Why would you want to do that ?"
Good question ...
- You're tired of setting your computers' clocks
- You're tired of forgetting to check your computers' clocks
- You're tired of your computers' clocks being 5 to 30 minutes off
- You want your your computers' clocks to be the best time "in the house"
- You want your your computers' clocks to all be the same
(So that time stamp comparisons are valid)
- It's a cool thing to do.
In the first hour we will show you hae easy it is to have your PC
(maybe even your Mac) get the correct time off the internet.
In the second hour we will show you how to have your entire home network on the same time.
