Introduction

SAMBA is the Free Software program that allows Unix computers to join MS Windows Workgroups & Domains.

Version 3 was released in the middle of last year (2003).  Late last year (Nov '03) Prentice Hall PTR published The Official SAMBA-3 HOWTO and Reference Guide.  Early this year (Mar '04) they published the companion "workbook" SAMBA-3 by Example.  A diverse HAL-PC group from the Linux SIG's, A+, MCSE, & CCNA have expressed interest in working the excercises in Samba 3 by Example (S3bE).  (Thank you to the A+ group for their interest in SAMBA and tolerance of "invading pengiuns").

          All interested parties are welcome

If you are not sure if you are interested, check out the preface to Samba 3 by Example (S3bE):

If your main purpose is to solve a specific Samba problem, you are still welcome to join us, especially since you may be able to help our understanding; but, do realize, our priority is the exercises.

Meetings

We are going to schedule meetings when people can attend & there is space available.

Preliminary

Initially, there were brief SAMBA interludes at 2 A+ meetings, and 1 small workshop to see if we can do this.  Both were quite successful:  The 5 of us at the workshop proved we have the knowledge & equipment to do the exercises; and we had a separate SAMBA "Theory" meeting to avoid diverting the A+ group from their main objectives.

S3bE Chapter 1

Chapter 1 Theory, Part 1

Thanks to the 14 folks who showed up, the size & enthusiasm of the crowd was gratifying and a bit of a surprise.  The presentation was informal (no slides, no time to make them), yet we accomplished the stated goals and also organized equipment duties for the lab to follow.

Attendance:  16       Thanks for coming.
Several of us were late due to unexpected road closings & resulting traffic.  In the future we should :
a.)   Check the traffic & road closings.
    b.)   Use San Felipe anyway.

As might be expected of a new group, we got off a slow start.  However, we overcame various equipment problems, & finished 3 of the 4 excercises in Ch 1.  We had more than enough hardware to accomplish our goals.  My thanks to all who brought equipment, especially Cleveland Glenn & Jeff Boggan whose gear was not used.  Much, much better to have extras than be caught short.

I hope everyone had an enjoyable, and more important, a productive time.  A least one person noticed that when you bring a diverse group like this together, unexpected learning happens.

Note:  The big difference between the HTML version and both the .PDF & bound versions, is that the HTML lacks the section numbers.

Next Meeting

Chapter 1 Laboratory, Part 2

Sat. Aug. 14, 2004 in the Lab again.
12 noon — 4:45 pm.
Scheduling is confirmed.

Equipment is arranged; however, anyone who wants to bring their own sniffer is not only welcome to, but encouraged to.  If all you have available is a "Winders" box, you can run Knoppix on it.  ethereal 0.10.4-1 is on Knoppix 3.4-2004-05-17 (the latest), so anyone can bring their own box & run a sniffer ...

Agenda

Reading (time permitting)

Texts:

We are working from the following books.  Both are available on-line in both HTML & PDF formats.  They are excellent books, and you may want to purchase your own.  If you are going to buy just one, it's a toss up; but I think get TOSHARG first by a nose.
