Knoppix HD Install

"Instigated" 11 Jan 2004 - RickArchibald.  I say "instigated" because I hope this specicific problem will grow to a general solution with many contributor/authors

Background

My brother Bill, an Amiga refugee, & his son Jake have been using Knoppix since last November.  This January, they decided to try a Knoppix hd install on Jake's computer.  It has 2 hd's: a 60 gB w/ XP & a 20 gB they cleaned off & used for Knoppix.  For safety's sake they disconnected the 60 (XP) during the %ip% They chose to use the script knx-hdinstall.  Things went fairly smoothly considering that knx-hdinstall does not provide a back button, & they had never done a Linux install before.  When they were done, it worked.  A tribute both to them & the script author.

Here is our e-mail exchange, slightly edited KnoppixInstallLog1

Now we get to the part where we fine-tune it & fix all the defaults.

To-Do 1

Obviously, if a Knoppix hd install is a logical next step after Knoppix CD use, then we need to know how to do one.  It seems to me it would be a good idea to do some.  And, record our experiences.

Problems

Swap Space

They wound up with a 1 gB partition set aside for swap space, but not working.  Over the phone we did something like the following:

HOSTNAME

The default hostname from knx-hdinstall is box.  Needless to say, this needs to be changed . . .  WTF is the hostname defined in %dq% I can find it in Red Hat, but not in the Knoppix hd install by remote control -- very frustrating.

Dual booting w/ LILO    UPDATED

The biggest problem so far is getting LILO to dual boot.  Remember, the knx-hdinstall script was not allowed to "see" the XP disk during installation.  This was a valid safety concern, so now we/they need to re-do lilo.conf to add XP.  Here is the original:  lilo.conf.0,
And the proposed revision:  lilo.conf.2.1    (lilo.conf.2 is abandoned)

Last weekend Bill tried to "install" the new lilo.conf, Here are his problems & changes:  lilo.conf.2.1b

Someone please check this out & tell us if this guy (#3) is full of it.

It seems to me he found it impossible to do what we are doing & gave up, and went back to putting Linux & Microsoft® Windows on the same drive.
