XFree86 Driver Version

How do I determine the version (date, release) of an XFree86 driver that my system is using?

Why do you care?

Because different versions of Knoppix behave differently on my Athlon box --

When I use Knoppix 3.2, I have to set screen=800x600 because 1024x728 won't work.
When I use Knoppix 3.3, there is no problem

I have checked the hardware detection screen & both versions are using the i740 driver for XFree86, & I always see:
Video is i740, using XFree(i740) Server (I haven't reproduced the pretty colors...)
so it is not a wrong driver issue. I think that leaves driver version as the explanation / culprit.

So, is there a Version/Date for the individual drivers (like i740) separate from the XFree86 version? & if so, how do I determine it?
