Samba Study Group Meetings

#NextMeeting

This is a dual-purpose page – used to report on meetings that have already taken place, as well as announce the time, place, & agenda of future meetings.

We are scheduling meetings when people can attend & there is space available.

Preliminary

Initially, there were brief SAMBA interludes at 2 A+ meetings, and 1 small workshop to see if we can do this.  Both were quite successful:  The 5 of us at the workshop proved we have the knowledge & equipment to do the exercises; and we had a separate SAMBA "Theory" meeting to avoid diverting the A+ group from their main objectives.

S3bE Chapter 1

Chapter 1 Theory, Part 1

Thanks to the 14 folks who showed up, the size & enthusiasm of the crowd was gratifying and a bit of a surprise.  The presentation was informal (no slides, no time to make them), yet we accomplished the stated goals and also organized equipment duties for the lab to follow.

Attendance:  16       Thanks for coming.
Several of us were late due to unexpected road closings & resulting traffic.  In the future we should :
a.)   Check the traffic & road closings.
    b.)   Use San Felipe anyway.

As might be expected of a new group, we got off a slow start.  However, we overcame various equipment problems, & finished 3 of the 4 excercises in Ch 1.  We had more than enough hardware to accomplish our goals.  My thanks to all who brought equipment, especially Cleveland Glenn & Jeff Boggan whose gear was not used.  Much, much better to have extras than be caught short.

I hope everyone had an enjoyable, and more important, a productive time.  A least one person noticed that when you bring a diverse group like this together, unexpected learning happens.

Scheduling is confirmed.
This could be slipped half an hour or a whole hour later, if warranted by popular demand.

Bill Hancock will present the Theory behind Ch. 2 of "Samba 3 by Example" and preview the exercises for the Lab. Steve Musacchia is helping him & it is very good.

He has taken the time to put together a Power Point show (don't worry we'll get him on Impress if it kills both of us), so we should be well organized ...

Suggested Reading

Uh, how about Chapter 2.  Seriously, we will try to post relevant TOSHARG readings also.

Robert Spotswood will join us again for the lab.  He is a successfully self-employed computer consultant & a member of HLUG.  He also probably has as much or more practical Samba experience as anyone we know.

Meeting was actually held in the Lab.
Robert Spotswood was invaluable to the success of the meeting.
We completed Excercise 2.2.3 on a Knoppix box as our server.

Hardware Organization
One of our past problems has been getting set up for each meeting to do something useful.  To solve this, we have been making a pair of servers with the (S3bE) mandated base configuration.  Two pair of 3 GB partitions has been set aside for these installations:  One pair on a portable Linux box, the other pair on the HLUG administered machine ("tux") in the HAL-PC Workshop.  Having these servers will eliminate wasted time getting started each time we meet.  We will have an imaging system to expedite starting with a fresh system for each exercise.  We need two different server distros because S3bE sometimes calls for RH 9, & sometimes for SuSE 8.  Our RH 9 installation is done, now we need to do SuSE 8.

SuSE Install Steps:

  1. Burn install CD's from .iso's on Novell DVD (2/3 done)
  2. Install SuSE 8
  3. Update Samba to at least ver. 3.0.2
  4. Check CUPS ver. (RH is 1.1.17-13)
  5. Set up KDE (desktop GUI)
Other Hardware Issues:
  1. "Lightweight" Window Manager
    • Choose
    • Install (twice - each server)
  2. Image Creation & Restoration Scripts
    • Mario has offered to write these
